The interview was done by Muriel A. Man. She interviewed Mrs. Roe Remington, or her fictitious name: Mrs. Hardy. It took place in Charleston, SC at the home of Mrs. Hardy on March 7, 1939. Mrs. Hardy was a middle-aged, caucasian housewife. She was studying the arts to become a teacher at the University of Iowa when she met her husband who was at college to be a teacher as well. He was learning chemistry, but eventually went back to get a PhD. They had many children who eventually attended college themselves. During the great depression, no professor at the college that her husband worked at got paid. She had to teach to support her family and they made it through. One day when she had nothing to do, she decided to make her home somewhat of a "motel" for tourists. Her business prospered and she eventually expanded it. Her children grew up and she made more than enough money through her business to support the family.

I chose this picture as a good example of The Great Depression. It shows how the conditions of the African Americans during this time period. The people didn't have vast amounts of money or even enough for new clothes. The picture depicts a boy with a ripped shirt that appears to be dirty. There is also another child next to him that isn't shown entirely, but does show that the sleeves are ripped and are not the cleanest. Furthermore, in the background there is a house that has damaged windows and various items in front of them. Due to lack of money of the citizens during The Great Depression, the windows of some houses were broken or tattered. Other parts, like the paint, were chipped as well as the not being exactly tidy. The Great Depression left the people in poverty, which didn't allow them to get their necessities.
